I started shaping my own boards in 2010 because I couldn't afford to replace a board that I broke. It was my dad's $1500 longboard and I snapped in 3 pieces on the jetty at Doheny.
I picked up a blank at Basham's to replace it and Timmy Patterson was cool enough the show my dad and I the process of shaping. That's how it started.
Growing up surfing SanO and Trestles was a great training ground for variety of waves and boards. But eventually, I had the itch to venture across the Pacific and Indian Ocean for bigger and more hollow waves.
After shaping and surfing boards for several years, I had a pretty good understanding of how surfboards work in 90% of surf conditions and I wanted to venture to a new territory: glassing and sanding. It was tough! I did a lot of R&D that you can view on my Youtube.
With some inspiration from my wife, I started exploring new construction ideas and found things that could make boards more elegant, durable, and faster. And eventually we made some boards I was proud of and wanted to share.
As interest in my boards grew, I felt like there was a space for me to solve a few problems I saw in the surf industry.
If you already surf, the industry was riddled with marketing and noise that made it difficult to know what surfboard was best for your style and level. I want to make boards with purpose and obvious use.
If you don't know how to surf, the industry generally feels clicky and territorial about everything: what to surf, where to surf, etc. That seems to be changing now, but there's still a lot of marketing that gets in the way. I want to create a clear path of progression so more people can have more fun and be in a better mood in the water. And I also want to create a culture that brings people in rather than gate keeps.
Surfboard costs have risen significantly and durability hasn't seemed to keep up. I think there is an opportunity for faster, lighter, more flexible surfboards that last longer. One of my greatest passions is exploring new constructions of boards that perform better in every way.
And lastly, the culture. I always felt like I had friends that surfed and partied and then I had church friends, but never both. That's because of the darkness that dominates the industry. I would like to create a space for people that enjoy the light:)
Thanks for reading. I hope to see you in the water and build a fun board together one day.
